#168 - Hans Niemann: The Chess Mafia

At 19, Hans Niemann beat Magnus Carlsen - the greatest chess player of a generation - at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup. Within 24 hours, Carlsen withdrew from the tournament without explanation. Within weeks, Niemann's name was attached to the biggest cheating scandal in modern chess. Within months, he was blacklisted from his own country's federation, denied tournament invitations, and forced to organize and fund his own matches while rivals collected millions in sponsorship from governments and billionaires.

Four years on, Hans is ranked world No. 12, the subject of a Netflix documentary, and still fighting for the top spot. In his first conversation with Peter McCormack, he breaks down what actually happened - across the board, behind the scenes, and inside his own head.

In this interview, we disuss power, institutional capture, ego, the psychology of elite performance, and the strange weight of being declared guilty by consensus before any evidence was ever produced.
